Policy on Students Driving Cars to School

The Board of Management, Management and staff endeavour to ensure that St Declan’s Community College is a safe place in which to learn, train, socialise and work.

The management of St Declan’s maintains a register of staff cars that may be parked on the grounds of the school at any point of the day. All parking spaces are reserved for staff members. This is essential to facilitate staff members travelling to and from their workplace. Unlike students, teachers cannot avail of or rely on a bus service to drop them to and from St Declan’s. It is also to ensure that they will be in a position to support the effective and efficient delivery of learning and teaching in the school.

Students of St Declan’s Community College do not have permission to drive cars onto school grounds without permission from the management of the school.

Students who wish to avail of a parking space must do so in writing. This can be done by completing the attached form, Appendix A.

The student must also hold a full driver’s license. Pupils with a Provisional License may not bring a car onto the school grounds.

Students are not allowed to drive a tractor or motor cycle onto school grounds.

All parts of the form must be filled in. The form must also be co-signed by a Parent/Guardian, regardless of whether the student is over 18 year of age, or not.

The following information shall be provided:

  • A photocopy of the student’s driver’s license
  • Signature from Parent/ Guardian
  • Make, Model, Registration number of Car
  • Evidence of Car Insurance and Road Tax

Where a student has been granted permission to park on school grounds it is conditional on the student not driving the car during the lunch break.

Students shall drive with due care, caution and consideration for others. Failure to do so will result in their driving and parking privileges withdrawn by management. Driving at speed, in a reckless or aggressive manner, not paying attention, not giving priority to pedestrians etc. will result in the student being denied the privilege to park on school grounds.

Should a student change their car, even for a day, they will need to inform the principal of the details of that change. Where ownership of the original car has changed the student will need to submit a new form with the details of the car and any supporting documentation.

The Principal may request the keys of a pupil’s car to be left in the office during the school day.

In the interests of Health and Safety the Principal / Deputy Principal shall have the right to withdraw, temporarily or permanently, the privilege to drive onto school grounds without prior notice.

All directions or instructions by Care-taking or supervising teaching staff must be respected. They will be acting as agents of the Board of Management.
