Green Schools is an international education programme which aims to make environmental awareness and action an intrinsic part of the life and ethos of the school. It also endeavours to develop responsible environmental attitudes both at home and in the wider community.

The Green Flag is awarded to schools that complete the essential elements of the programme. St. Declan’s was awarded its first Green Flag in 2005 for reducing the amount of waste produced by the school. This was followed by a second Flag for improving energy efficiency in 2007 and a third for water conservation in 2009.

The Green Schools Committee, with the support of the whole school, is hoping to earn its fourth Green Flag, the theme of which is Transport, early in 2011. We are very proud of the fact that St. Declan’s is one of the few Secondary Schools in Ireland so advanced on the programme.

We have found the Green Schools to be a great initiative as the pupils now take a responsibility for their school and are proud of their school. The pupils’ attitudes to litter and waste have greatly improved; hopefully this will continue outside of school and be seen in the community.
