St. Declan’s Community College is a modern co-educational school under the auspices of Co. Waterford VEC. As it passes the fortieth anniversary of its opening, St. Declan’s continues to develop as the focus of second-level education in mid-Waterford.
The size of the student population has increased greatly over the years, and the schools accomodation has expanded to meet student needs. The most recent extension was opened in September 2008. This included an ASD Unit. Students attending the ASD Unit move between the unit and mainstream classrooms as inclusion of all students is considered best practice. The benefits of this unit will be evident both within the school and in the wider community.
St. Declan’s offers its students a highly comprehensive range of subjects to Junior and Leaving Certificate level. Fourth Year is very well established in St. Declan’s, while programmes such as Junior Certificate Schools Programme and Leaving Certificate Applied add further breadth to the Curriculum.
Our staff of fifty teachers are renowned for their teaching skills as well as their enthusiasm and dedication to their students. Our teachers work in partnership with parents to provide a caring, challenging and supportive educational environment. In addition, the St. Declan’s Parent’s Council has played an important role in the development of the College over the past twenty-five years.
Sporting, Cultural and Social activities play an important part in life at St. Declan’s. In sport, St. Declan’s competes at County, Provincial and National level. The emphasis in St. Declan’s is always on sending out well prepared individuals and teams who take pride in representing themselves and their school. This helps foster a positive attitude towards sport and creates an atmosphere where participation is as important as success.
Apart from sports, many other extra-curricular activities are also organised. These include music, drama, choir, debating, public-speaking, quiz teams, Gaisce (Presidents) Awards, enterprise competitions, fashion shows, school magazine, art exhibitions and many more. All students are encouraged to take part in some of these activities to foster their social development and to develop interests for life after school.
The current enrolment of St. Declan’s is 684 students, made up of 318 girls and 366 boys. While numbers are large, the College retains its personal and caring approach to all students. St. Declan’s is a Community College, and many of our teachers live locally in the catchment area. An understanding of a student’s background allows us to deal with each student in an informed and sympathetic fashion.
St. Declan’s Community College has established an enviable record of academic excellence, firm discipline, extracurricular participation and a caring approach to student welfare. These are the four corner stones upon which the success of St. Declan’s has been and will continue to be built.
